Blog Tour: Come Marching Home, Pt. 2

Welcome back to the Come Marching Home blog tour! Today, we have an interview with two sets of siblings from the book; Ernst and Alfonse, and Franz and Ada! Don't forget to check out the official lineup and schedule! While you're doing that, be sure to take a look at the pre-order goodies!

-------

1. What’s the most embarrassing thing you ever did together?

Alfonse: *runs hand over face* You should probably take this.

Ernst: Well…there was that time when you were climbing a tree to impress a girl. I was supposed to stop her on the road and keep her occupied until you got ‘into position’ but instead you fell out of the tree and broke your arm.

Alfonse: Mom was mad.

Ernst: Secretly, she thought it was funny though.

2. If you had more funds/means than you do now, what would be the most extravagant thing you would buy/do?

Alfonse: I want my own car. But like, one of the speedsters. Sleek and maybe red.

Ernst: I’d like to travel. Kind of hard when a war is going on, but maybe someday I will. I’d love to take Ada to see some different places.

Alfonse: Of course you would.

3. What are some of your favorite holiday memories?

Ernst: The Midwinter Festival is always the best time of year. I remember how much fun we used to have as kids. The food, the parties, and the gifts.

Alfonse: I remember one year where we ate so much we fell asleep at the festival and had to be carried home. That was the year we got wooden swords.

Ernst: Which also injured you.

Alfonse: I’m just lucky to have a brother who is a healer, that’s all.

4. Thank you, Ernst and Alfonse. On to Franz and Ada! What is one bad habit you have that you think the other doesn't know about?

Franz: Ada chews her nails.

Ada: I do not!

Franz: You only say that because you thought I didn’t know about it!

Ada: Well, you never clean your room. It’s a disaster! And you always leave your socks in the bathroom.

Franz: I can’t take a bath with them on.

Ada: They smell terrible!

5. What is your favorite holiday food?

Ada: Apple torte. Really anything with apples. Our village has some of the best apples that the Seidels grow in their orchard.

Franz: Agreed. Though nothing really beats apple cider and caramel popcorn. We only ever really get that on the Midwinter Festival so it’s really special.

6. How would you describe your appearance? How about the appearance of your sibling?

Franz: *sighs* Ada is too pretty, I am always having to beat the village boys away to save my precious sister.

Ada: That is a lie, I would say I’m moderate. And I am only interested in Ernst anyway. The other boys know that. *Blushes*

Franz: Well, how would you describe me, then? Ruggedly handsome? A real catch?

Ada: Frogface.

Franz: -_-

Flower of the Underworld: Character Interview

Click to check out Hazel's Character Purgatory!

Welcome to day one of the blog tour for "The Flower of the Underworld!" There's lots of fun stuff planned, including a live Q&A with the author later this week!

Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing a handful of characters from this book: Hades, Persephone, Dionysus, and the siblings Artemis and Apollo!
This interview will be spoiler-free, and give you a glimpse at the types of characters you'll be involving yourself with should you pick up this book. :D

----
We'll start with Persephone, goddess of Spring and daughter of Demeter. Would your powers be able to grow foliage in a desert area? Or is that more of Demeter’s shtick?

Persephone: Creating things is more my mother’s thing. However, if there was already foliage growing in the desert then I would probably be able to make it flourish more.

I've always wondered: do trees mind being climbed?

Persephone: Not at all! As long as you are respectful and treat them kindly. They do not like to be married to people trying to prove a point, however. I also have to say that trees do not at all mind being turned into books. They find it quite an honor.

What’s something that makes you gush (babies, new plants, Hallmark movies, etc.)?

Persephone: Well, of course I love plants, and seedlings are just so adorable! But I also will say that I really love puppies and kittens!

What’s Hades’ most annoying habit?

Persephone: Oh, well, I wouldn’t say he has a truly annoying habit, but sometimes I do think he gets too involved in his work. He’ll go for hours and not notice the time. I’m not sure it’s entirely healthy.

Now, to the Lord of the Dead: Hades, brother to Zeus and Poseidon! What’s Persephone’s most annoying habit? (Does she even have any?)

Hades: Annoying habits? I can’t really name any. Obviously I haven’t known her very long, but…I kind of feel like she’s perfect. Is that too sappy?

No, not at...well, a little. But a wonderful kind of sappy. Is there anything you wish you knew more about?

Hades: Well, I think being the Lord of the Dead makes you a very world-weary person. There’s not a lot I don’t know about. There’s a lot I wish I didn’t know about. I suppose sometimes I wish I had a better grasp of politics so I could pull one over on my brothers and the other Olympians, but I think that’s more because I simply hate politics than my lack of study in the topic.

What’s the weirdest piece of information given to you by the recently deceased?

Hades: I hear a lot of weird information. Shades don’t have much in the way of coherent speech a lot of times, but on occasion I can get something out of them. One fellow tried to convince me that a theme park was on its way to taking over the world. I don’t really buy it, especially since they will have to compete with my brother Zeus.

A theme park? Well, I guess I could see Disney parks doing that, if we want to get all conspiratorial, or if the machines somehow got taken over by rogue AI like in a sci-fi show. Continuing with the oddity of humanity, how often do the dead tell you that they’re “not supposed to be here”?

Hades: Oh, all the time. Humans typically don’t take death very well.

Is there anything you hope never changes?

Hades: Being immortal, I’ve seen a lot of changes, but I do really hope that the Underworld will always be a place I can go to relax and stay out of the issues everyone else seems to have.

Thank you, Hades! Onto Dionysus, god of wine and parties. Which of the Big Three is your favorite? (I’m fairly certain you won’t suffer repercussions for answering, as Hades is the only one here and I’m 99% sure you’re not picking him. I’m also 99% sure he wouldn’t be offended if you didn’t.)

Dionysus: Well, to be fair, I would rather be around most anyone else. But I suppose if I had to choose, Poseidon does throw the best parties.

What holiday is your favorite?

Dionysus: Mardi Gras of course, darling! A fantastic celebration that we Olympians sadly had nothing to do with!

Are there any odd human fads that you don’t understand?

Dionysus: Oh, humans are always coming up with the most amusing things! I rather love embracing all of them. Social Media is a fantastic invention, isn’t it? One cannot post too many selfies. I suppose I still don’t truly understand “vaping” though.

Yeah, neither do I. Have you ever done something amazing that no one was around to see?

Dionysus: Ooh too many times, unfortunately. Either that or everyone around was too drunk to remember. But such is life, I suppose.

Now, last but not least, the twins Artemis (goddess of the Hunt) and Apollo (rock god)! This is the first story I've come across where Artemis plays roleplay games. Specifically, Dungeons&Dragons. So, tell me about your D&D character/play style!

Artemis: Well, I’m the dungeon master, of course, but when I do play as a character, I’m usually a huntress just like in real life.

Apollo: Except she likes to woo the lads. Which she cannot do in real life.

Artemis: Shut up. Typically, we like to change up the play style depending on the day and who we’re playing with. I prefer long campaigns, but not everyone has the patience for that.

Has Apollo played D&D (if not, why)?

Apollo: Of course! I play a very brave mage who is very powerful and gets all the ladies.

Artemis: *eye-roll*

What's the most ridiculous argument you two have gotten into recently?

Artemis: When are we not getting into ridiculous arguments? I think the most recent may have had something to do with guitar strings.

Apollo: Which you still have not apologized for.

Artemis: Because it wasn’t me.

Is there any instrument you can’t play?

Apollo: I assume this is for me because my dear sister can’t play anything to save her life. And the answer is no. I’m naturally gifted.

Artemis: *snorts* That’s one word for it.

What’s one thing that people usually assume you have in common/like/hate the same, but you actually don’t?

Artemis: I think one of the main misconceptions is that everyone seems to think I’m good at music, and Apollo is good at hunting. Neither of which are true.

What is your favorite weapon (say damage done, or aesthetics) vs. weapon of choice (either in real life, or D&D)?

Artemis: Real life I will always go with my bow, but a good dagger is also handy. In D&D, always double swords.

Apollo: My bow or my charming good looks.

Ahaha, I figured.
Many thanks to characters and author both for this interview!

Interviewing Characters

This is everyone's favorite part of the writing process, right? You sit your stubborn characters down and try to ask them why they refuse to make up, always wear bunny slippers, why they refuse to give you their name, etc. In the last case, I usually resort to saying something like: "Tell me your real name or you'll be stuck with 'Zupid Gruppi'!"

There are so many ways to interview a character. For Major/Main characters, I might start with a detailed interview (using questions like these or these), or I might not get to asking them much until I'm halfway done with the first draft (in which case I just keep asking "Why this?" until I get somewhere). If I'm lucky, I'll spot the character I need while browsing enneagrams, or I'll use a Myers-Briggs personality test and go from there.
For other characters, though, going through all the questions about daily living are...tedious, nigh on useless. Most of the time. Every so often one of the questions along the lines of "name of high-school sweetheart" becomes relevant, then I go back and fill it out.
Minor/Side characters can be well fleshed out using an abbreviated questionnaire like this or this. Sometimes all that's needed is a good physical description.

I thought I'd share some snippets of my character interviews I did while writing Trouble in Bookland. These are mostly from early drafts (I'll be making a post about that in the near-ish future). Ethan's (he's the antagonist) interview is more current, when I was hitting a block at about the halfway point. So some spoilers for Trouble in Bookland in that one. Highlight if you wish to view. Linda (the protagonist) is the other interviewee.
Italics are characters, bold is me.

---

Linda (age 8-10, early draft):

So right now you’re living with Johan, who is your new father’s son, and your mom?

*nods*

How do you like it?

*crumples tissues and throws them aside* It’s not home. At home, we all used to laugh and live together. Johan and I do that sometimes. But mom doesn’t like talking about where we used to live, what dad used to be like, or Ethan.

What about your new dad? What’s he like?

*shrugs* I don’t like him very much, because the only time I see him much is when he and Johan are talking. He doesn’t like that Johan’s a Writer and keeps telling him to live in Reality. It doesn’t make sense…

So you like Johan a lot?

Yuh-huh. It’s just…sometimes he makes me forget Ethan. I don’t want to forget Ethan. *scrunches self into couch cushions*

That’s when you get angry with him?

*nods*

Do you like yourself?

I…I guess so? *puzzled look*

There’s nothing you regret doing, want to do that you’re ashamed of, anything?

*looks even more confused* Uh-um…no?

Well, then what’s your outlook on life? Are you pessimistic, optimistic, do you feel that most people you meet are honest, or lying?

*frowns and grips head* What’s that supposed to mean?

Uh…(oh, yeah, pre-teen character. Some things on my questionnaire aren't relevant.) Change of question. What’s your life like?

*shrugs, making a face* I wake up, I eat, I go to school, I come home, I eat, I do homework, I play with Johan until mom or dad comes home and tells us to stop making so much noise. And I write until my brains short out.

Do you have any friends?

*relaxes a bit* Nope. *pause* Can I ask you something?

Sure, shoot.

Are you an Author?

*chuckles* Sort of, yeah.

Okay. ‘Cuz this was starting to feel like a Character interview.

---

Ethan:

Why’d you mess things up in Bookland? How do you feel now that Linda has ownership of your world? Something isn't sitting right...

*gives look* Becaaaaauuuuuuuse that was my plan. To mess things up and start deteriorating the Patchwork. You feeling okay?

Meh, just trying to figure things out. Scatterbrain doesn’t help. Hey, why do you care how I'm feeling?

Maybe, just maybe, I’m a human being with concern for others.

Ha-ha.

Yeah, I know. *grins again* To answer your other question…happy. The world’ll survive, and she’ll be stretching her creative muscles.

Huh. Okay, then. What went wrong, what went wrong…

Something with Fourth-wall awareness, obviously.

Obviously. Let’s see…

Why don’t you just follow along with Linda and see where she heads? *chuckle*

Oh dear.
---

I hope you enjoyed this. Any questions for any characters in TiB? Outside the story, I've found that most of them are fourth-wall aware, so outlandish and/or crossover questions will most likely be answered.
Thanks for reading!
